What does the Bible say about…an abundant life?
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (John 10:10)
The other day I was flicking through channels on the television when I came across a televangelist who was speaking on prosperity. During his message, I got the idea that he was saying to all who were ‘under the sound of his voice’, that if you didn’t have things, you were not living right and that God was withholding blessings for you. This really got me to thinking…
Now, I do believe that God cares about His children having the things necessary to live a life here on this earth. However, I couldn’t help but to think of the Christian minority in other parts of the world who have hardly any worldly possessions, and are persecuted daily (sometimes losing their lives), just because of the Lord they serve.
I wondered how I would feel if I heard this preacher’s message if I was born overseas somewhere and knew nothing of western civilization. That message would mean that because I was poor and sometimes hungry, that God was unhappy with me and choosing not to bless me. I would get the idea that this preacher’s message was saying that God somehow ‘worked’ for me as if He were some genii in a lamp and as long as I performed how He asked me to; I would have lots and lots of worldly possessions.
I would also look at a message like this one as a pure ‘slap’ in the face. If I’d somehow lost my husband or wife just because they were a ‘Christian’, or I had to hide my Bible to avoid execution. Did I mention that me and my congregation were constantly on the move, keeping our church underground since our buildings were always destroyed at the hands of unbelievers?
My friend, we have brothers and sisters in other parts of the world who die for our Lord and Savior everyday. They die because they trust in Jesus and His saving grace. Most of them die poor with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. They profess Him when the majority hates Him openly. They choose to be identified with Him even though doing so means losing one’s life. Are they not living right?
Don’t get me wrong, we are blessed in this country. We have freedom of speech and the right to worship whatever god we so please. We have homeless shelters for the poor, soup lines, and there’s not a shortage of places to worship. You can even sit in Starbuck’s and read a Bible openly in front of whomever you like. America is a free country.
But how free is freedom? With all of the liberties afforded us, we have the greater obligation. We have cars to get us where we’re going, homes to live in, and money to buy food. However, we ought not to let this be the cause of foolish pride and the belief that somehow God loves us more than our brothers and sisters around the world who don’t enjoy the same freedoms that we have.
So, what is this ‘life more abundantly’ being spoken of in this verse of scripture? I believe that Christ is more concerned about our ‘spiritual’ health. How many times have you seen an outwardly beautiful person, but their actions and conversation made them ‘ugly’? This is because Jesus seeks to change our minds. The fruit of the Spirit are the virtues that make for a truly beautiful person. Without genuine joy in your life, you are no fun to be around. Without peace in your life, you are full of worry and are avoided like the plague.
Surly God gives us the strength to get wealth. No question about that and many of the Old Testament saints were indeed very rich. There are also some today that trust in Jesus and are very wealthy. But our God knows each and every one of us intimately and knows in His divine wisdom who can actually handle riches. Riches would destroy many of us as it would cause us to forget the God who gives all things. Test your heart but He knows you better.
Since Christ came to change our inward person, and the Bible calls our spirits ‘precious’ in the eyes of the Lord; it is this part of you the thief comes to destroy. The battle is for your soul. Satan wants to steal your joy…rendering you ineffective. He ultimately wants to destroy your life. But all praises be to the Lord Jesus Christ who is greater and able to keep us.
Most western minds think in terms of possessions. Sure, God wants to bless you. But God also wants your heart and soul above everything else. Have you or are you making something or someone else ‘God’ today? Whatever you put before Him-your job, your husband, your wife, your children, your self, be careful that you are not fashioning yourself a god to serve. Peace be with you.
